The MPI Biosecurity Facility is a state-of-the-art plant health environment laboratory (PHEL) and Post entry Quaratine (PEQ) Greenhouse in Mount Albert Auckland.

The laboratory components emphasize containment and the streamlined organisation of multiple scientific workflows happening concurrently.

In contrast to tightly secured technical facilities, the MPI administration and workplace wing are crafted to foster openness, encouraging collaboration and camaraderie among staff.

A highly functional strategy was developed to align with the operational requirements of the facility, placing utmost importance on ensuring clear and concise navigation throughout the facility. This involved a thorough analysis of the facility’s layout, considering the intricate workflows and operational processes inherent to its function.

The strategy prioritises wayfinding solutions aimed at optimising efficiency for all users.

It encompasses clear and consistent labelling systems for labs, rooms, equipment, and amenities, ensuring that users can easily identify and locate the resources they need to carry out their tasks effectively.

The wayfinding design for the facility is in development.
