As part of the broader Whangārei Hospital masterplan, the new Radiation Oncology Facility is set to offer essential radiation treatment services to cancer patients across the Northland region.

Featuring reception, consultation, and waiting areas for families on the upper level, staff workspaces and amenities on the mid-level, and cutting-edge Linear Accelerator Treatment Rooms partially underground, the facility is designed for comprehensive care.

Interfacing with the existing Jim Carney Cancer Centre via a bridge, patient access posed a key wayfinding challenge as patients will only enter the new building through the Jim Carney Centre.

To address this, we developed a wayfinding strategy and series of strategic solutions to improve the legibility of the environment, comprehension of access and to optimise user navigation in the present, near, and future terms across the expansive Whangārei Hospital site.
