Te Rangihīroa is a six-story, 450-bedroom student accommodation facility designed for first-year residents. The building honours Te Rangihīroa (Sir Peter Buck), who was the first Māori to graduate with a medical degree from a New Zealand university.
The wayfinding strategy and bilingual signage within the facility are carefully integrated with the building's architecture. Internally, these elements complement the interior colours and incorporate a knot motif inspired by the He Manawa Ora glass frit pattern. The wayfinding system features a custom typeface derived from Te Rangihīroa’s handwriting, which is also used in the building’s identity and in the whakataukī etched into the stone façade.
For the building's destinations and rooms, we established naming conventions that connect to either Te Rangi Hīroa or Parihaka, providing name descriptors that explain their meanings. This approach offers an educational opportunity for students, helping to keep this important history alive.
