Auckland’s Domestic Terminal was suffering from a number of navigational issues. The linear spatial layout and little understood nomenclature was contributing to a poor passenger experience. To resolve these challenges we crafted a comprehensive wayfinding strategy. This strategy emphasised terminal building access points and identification through a standardised coding system, aligning the domestic terminal with industry-standard toponomy practices.
To assess the strategy's efficacy, we conducted extensive Customer-Centered Design (CCD) testing. Using a 3D model of the terminal, we simulated all signage elements, guiding participants through several typical journeys from the forecourt to departure gates, with designated milestones along the way.
Significant participant comprehension of the strategy indicated an enhanced passenger journey.
Implementation of the new system is slated for Q3 2024.
