The recently unveiled student recreation building at AUT, Te Āhuru, serves as a multifaceted hub housing academic offices alongside a diverse array of activity spaces tailored to meet the evolving needs of students in a digital era.

In close collaboration with the University project group, we embraced Te Āhuru’s overarching vision as ‘an aspirational place for wellness and play,’ shaping the brief for the supergraphics accordingly.

A novel system for naming spaces was developed, reflecting a contemporary interpretation of play. Infused with elements drawn from Te Ao Māori visual culture and contemporary digital technology, the graphic approach aims to evoke a distinct sense of place.

The suite of supergraphic treatments seamlessly integrates into the building’s architecture, not only enhancing its functionality but also forging a deeply memorable and uniquely immersive environment for both students and staff alike.

“A strong display of graphic design seamlessly integrated into the structural fabric of its environment. I like how the initial Intersect type system created is adaptable and considered upon multiple surfaces. I particularly enjoy how the arrangement of graphic elements within the system can be dismantled and/or layered appearing multi-dimensional, demonstrating an understanding of visual depth and creating drama.

There’s also strong cultural reference and consideration in this type system which is relevant to the space and its location in New Zealand. Lastly, I really liked the bold sense of attitude and personality in each of the words/phrases chosen to bring each typographic display to life.”
