8 Willis Street emerges as the new collaborative workspace for Stats NZ and the Ministry for the Environment in Wellington. Spanning 12 levels, this innovative space features co-working areas tailored for cross-disciplinary teams, with the wayfinding design narrative inspired by concepts related to Papatūānuku.

Early consultation with the cultural team uncovered the project’s strong feminine narrative, deeply rooted in its whakapapa. In Te Ao Māori, weaving traditionally embodies a female art-form symbolising unity between people and place. The structured, grid-like approach of Tāniko weaving seamlessly aligns with the project’s vision.

The signage design interweaves mathematical principles, pattern-making, and data to reflect the core functions of Stats NZ and the Ministry for the Environment. The inclusion of Fibonacci patterns pays homage to the natural world, mirroring the Ministry’s work within it.

Expressed through distinct sign types, bespoke typography, and icon set, the forms of Tāniko weaving, Abacus, and Fibonacci form a cohesive narrative throughout the space. Level identifications serve as site-specific artworks, featuring Fibonacci patterns and colours from the interior palette to create visual landmarks.

Fibonacci elements seamlessly integrate into the fit-out, adorning kai stations, acoustic surfaces, glazing manifestations, and meeting room walls. Functional signage is thoughtfully executed using timber-look panels and typographic graphics, harmonizing with the overall design scheme.
